Let’s address ARTHAS first. Unless something changes, it is indeed a hardback coming out in April of 2009. While unfortunately there are no plans to put a sample chapter in the goodie bag for Blizzcon, do look for a postcard of the incredible cover. I met with some folks at Blizzard to discuss the upcoming trilogy, and they showed me the art. Like everything Blizzard does, this one is fantastic! More on my trip in a separate post. 🙂
As for TWILIGHT, the third and final book in the Dark Templar trilogy set in the StarCraft universe, current plans are for that to come out in May of 2009. The reason for the delay is…well, we can blame that fallen paladin for this too! Yes, I was hard at work on ARTHAS and so the projects got swapped around a bit. I am currently on my final edit for TWILIGHT and it’s fun to revisit this series. I really loved Jake and R.M., and enjoyed the “voice” in which the story is told. I like to describe the series as Bladerunner meets Indiana Jones. I’m quite proud of it and I hope you all go out and pick up FIRSTBORN and jump right in, knowing that the third book is indeed on its way!
Well, I’m glad to hear what’s happening with those two. I’m excited for both, and can’t wait for them to release. Keep up the good work. =]
Hi Christie,
What can you tell us about Wow: Arthas? How far back in the timeline will you write about Arthas? He is been portrayed as a child in Day of the Dragon, later one of the judges on Tirion’s trial (Of Blood and Honor), and I recall reading him still a child in WoW: Beyond the Dark Portal when Muradin arrived to talk to Terenas.
We actually start with Arthas as a ten year old. 🙂 That is one of the things I really love best about this. While it was certainly fun and challenging to depict the famous scenes from the game we all know and love, I loved having the chance to show Arthas as a child and youth before things started going so bad for him. We’ll see his take on some famous scenes, meet some new characters, and my favorite part, get to watch his romance with Jaina unfold.
One fun bit–the scene in Beyond the Dark Portal, where he’s practicing swordplay and Muradin comes across him, was one that I had written. You’ll see the same scene here–from Arthas’s point of view. 🙂
What makes Arthas so fascinating to me is that, in my opinion in a better time, he would have done just fine as a king and ruler. But he didn’t have the right stuff as it were to handle what he needed too. He was flawed, and under pressure, he cracked. And that, my friends, is meat and drink to a writer. I do hope people will enjoy it!
dear Christie.
I am a great fan of your books and I must tell first that you inspired me to write fan fiction stories. To this date, I am writing my sixth fan fiction roman, just because I loved Lord of the Clans.
If the book “Arthas” is the first of the trilogi, will this trilogi be about the prince, or is it a story in a bigger story? What other character will we learn to know?
I’m SO looking forward to “Arthas”!

Can’t wait to read the Arthas book! Loved Rise of the Horde and Lord of the Clans!

I find Arthas a fascinating character, but at the same time he falls into line with the overused plot-device of hero possession. Blizzard’s other two major franchises, Diablo and StarCraft, also had hero possession in central positions(the first warrior that slew Diablo and Kerrigan). Both characters in those franchises got pretty raw deals, with no hope being presented as to the possibility of redemption.
Full possession of Arthas’s body may not occur till the end of The Frozen Throne, but he lost his free will long before that shortly after he had taken up Frostmourne. Does this book stop after Frostmourne is acquired or does it go on after that? Seems like it would be difficult to have meaningful character development when the character has lost their free will.
Really excited over this Christie. Looking forward to April now.
Dear Christie Golden,
It is my first time posting here but I would like to first say that I have been following your Warcraft Literature since the first release of ‘Lord of the Clans’. My first edition of it is well creased and read it 3 times during the ages. I think I was 13 or 14 when it first came out. Nowadays I’m 23 and still reading hardcore 😉
I just want to say congratulations on all of your fantasy work and I look forward to read more from you.
I would also like to ask if Arthas will be of a Warcraft Trilogy or is the new Warcraft Trilogy you’re working on a seperate project\subject?
You’ve done a wonderful job adapting the StarCraft universe and making it your own, I eagerly await the conclusion to your trilogy as it has kept me on my feet the entire time.
After reading each book, I’ve gone on to give them to fellow enthusiasts of the game who might enjoy it.
I was surprised to hear you had changed the date to May of 2009 though 😦 such a shame, our local Borders had it listed on pre-order for this September and finding out that it was not, indeed, going to be ready and in my hands by the end of this month was a disappointment.
Keep it up though, you do a wonderful job.
forgive me for butchering the english language. I can type, but it just ends up with me stringing the words together 😀
Congratulations from a longtime fan on the opportunity to further expand the Warcraft universe, and I must say that it seems really appropriate that you have been given the chance to write a book about Arthas. There are some fascinating comparisons and contrasts between him and Thrall, and back in Warcraft III I felt like the two of them were following inverse paths, the human whose desire to be a hero destroyed his people and the orc whose aspiration to save his people made him a hero. Having been quite impressed with your take on Thrall, I’m looking forward to seeing how you handle Arthas. Good luck to you with your writing.

Hi Christie,
Looks like you’ve been very busy lately! Just wanted to drop you a line to see if you were going to be able to make it to MileHiCon this year. if so, I’d love to have you participate in Friday’s autograph alley, since you are a past guest of honor. (Pf course, doing a reading and/or programming would be great, too!) Let me know … Rose
Oh my goodness. I read Rise of the Horde recently and finished Lord of the Clans this evening. All I can say is… you are AMAZING. I have found books about other games to be dull and uninteresting, but as I am an adamant WoW player and find the lore more and more interesting as I progress through the raids, I decided to pick up a book and read it. I have always been a member of the Horde and I have to say, I truly love the orc story line and Thrall’s story. When I read about Kil’jaeden and Archimonde, it’s like the entire game just clicked and everything made sensel. Like it has a real story and these bosses who yell annoying things have real histories.
I can’t wait to read Arthas! I’m not a StarCraft fan so I doubt I will read that series, but I am sure those are fantastic as well!
LOVE LOVE LOVE the new opening page of your website. And i am very excited about the prospect of my favorite author EVER writing star Wars books…not just ONE but THREE!!!!!! how cool is that! I do miss you writing star TREK though and was wondering do you think you will EVER write them again? Ever? sniff…sniff!!!!
Lame that Twilight got pushed back. I find warcraft (as a universe, not your books in particular) to be boring, wish you’d stuck to finishing the starcraft book for us few starcraft fans, seeing as wow gets like 3x the books as it is.
